Brisbane Topless Car Run

by Steven Novotny

Sunday, the 29th of October was the 3rd Annual Brisbane Topless Car Run, a navigation run which was held in support of and during Breast Cancer Awareness week. The meeting point was at New Farm Park at 8:30am which meant the revolting task of setting an alarm on a Sunday morning. There was a large turnout of competitors numbering just under a hundred. The massive variety of cars attended, including Corvettes, MGs, Austin Healys, Hot Rods and of course some fine looking Hondas.

Apart from Gavin and John from the Honda Sporting Car Club driving their S2000s, Campbell and Michele drove the blue City rocket, while Steven and partner drove the red CRX. When 9:30 finally arrived and all the convertibles were ready to roll,  naturally the heavens opened and it started to rain. Luckily, some of us were smart enough to leave the roof off as we left and that meant valuable extra points. Twenty minutes into the run, it was time for a U-turn to retrace our steps.  This corresponded with wave number one to Mr and Mrs X in the black Corvette.  Things were looking promising as we travelled along familiar roads through Kenmore, zipping up and down the hills through Mount Crosby.

We wondered how poor Sue, Lee and Alan felt about the traffic jam outside their house as strangers scavenged through their front yard, with clipboard and pencil in hand, madly noting the details of their garden. Our instruction sheet recommended that we stop at Colleges Crossing for a short break, but we decided to give Mum a quick hello instead.  On the road again after a recharge and stretch, we were ready to make up for lost time when somebody who shall remain nameless, left the street directory at home.  This meant yet another U-turn and it was time for another wave to the black Corvette heading in the correct direction.

On the home stretch through Runcorn, we were frantically trying to spot signs hidden by trees and coloured with graffiti. The roads become less familiar requiring a few detours and frequent waves to the X family in the Corvette. After 2 hours driving time we arrived at the final destination: Morningside TAFE where a mighty collection of machinery gleamed in the parking lot to welcome us.  When the last car arrived it was time for the presentation and awards.

A considerable list of collectibles were generously donated for the auction, including a cutaway Olympic torch plus a range of autographed memorabilia. Some fantastic bargains were picked up, such as an autographed front guard off a V8 touring car that went for 30 bucks.
A great day was had by all with all proceeds going towards the Wesley Breast Clinic.
