Despatch from Northern Ireland

by Nathan Thorne

It's been a year now since I left Australia, but due to work commitments I haven't really done or seen much. The average car in Northern Ireland is smaller and newer than in Australia. It's rare to see cars more than 10 years old or with more than a 2L engine. They don't survive the salted winter roads well and running costs such as insurance and fuel are high. Drivers are generally more tolerant and easy-going. Most of the main roads still go through small villages, and it's not frowned upon for delivery drivers to just stop on the road and hold up traffic for 10 minutes or so. I've even seen this happen on the main road between Belfast and Dublin. I've been to a couple of good car shows, and now some of the photos have finally been scanned so I can share them with the club.

In August there was a motor sport festival here in Belfast. The main feature was a short hillclimb in the grounds of Stormont (where the Parliament sits). There were a good variety of cars, with everything from F1 to go-carts, WRC to standard road vehicles. Guests included Moss, Augustini, Irvine and Trulli, along with some less known Irish champions. Trulli put last year's Jordan F1 car up the course, but every time he touched the throttle the wheels spun. I hope next year they bring some tyre warmers so we can get a feel for their capabilities. Other cars of note were the oldest existing Rolls Royce, a D-type Jaguar (driven by Irvine), and a lot of Ferraris including an F40. Along side the racing there were static displays. The Honda stand featured an Integra Type R and a mark 2 S800 convertible.

On the 4th of November I went to Birmingham to meet the S800 club at a classic car show. It's supposed to be the biggest in Europe, it took up 2 pavilions similar in size to the one at Southbank. I met the guy who has most of the new and remanufactured S car parts and he took me to his garage to see his stock. The S800 stand was very well presented, thanks to a free display because Honda UK leant on the company who does their own.

You can see the S800 car club's web site at www.honda-s800-club@freeserve.co.uk.
