National Meet 2001, Representing QLD

by Michele Cottrell
It always seems to be so busy leading up to Easter for teachers. The marking, mid-semester reports, tidying up students' profile sheets, one's desk and the list goes on...

So Easter sort of caught me unawares this year, knowing that I'd be travelling down to Sydney, but lacking the time to do all of those little things before leaving. Remembering to pack masking tape, wire for the secondary bonnet catch, patience for 'those moments' during the Observation run...etc.

My plan to pack the car and go to bed early on the Thursday night was a joke! Well, the 'go to bed early' was anyway... At about 2am I headed southward, armed with strong coffee, things to nibble on and music CDs. The aim was to have breakfast in Tamworth with Campbell.  The roads were quiet and good speed was made. The first Police car I saw was just out of Armidale and he thought my speed was a bit too good. Shame about that. I did finally have breakfast and we then headed further south.

By about the middle of the day, my Civic's seats, which I'd always thought were so comfortable, weren't so much so any more! When is that next petrol stop? - damn these fuel-efficient cars!
We did finally make it to the motel, not a moment too soon! A quick unpack of the car, a long awaited shower and finally a scotch and dry!  With glass in hand, I headed off with our registration papers. It was a hive of activity in the NSW camp - CAMS licence forms being completed, printers being dusted off ready for a hard night's work. By now my lack of sleep was going to my head, or was that the scotch?

Soon, I was back at the room and ready for a nice comfortable bed...I didn't mind missing dinner, sleep was soooo much more important at that point in time! At the Motorkhana ground (and I do have to agree, it is the best MK ground I've been on) my hand brake needed adjusting. Having always left it to the service person, I thought it was somewhere under the car. But no, with the help of Neil Robson and Mal Leo, the adjustment hole was found behind the front seat, and quickly set a bit lower. It was good to have all 4 courses set up at the one time. I certainly had a fun day. Enough time between runs to catch up with others from far away places. It would have been nice to get some idea of one's times, but it wasn't to be.

To be continued...
