LED Traffic lights

by Michele Cottrell

I like traffic lights, I like traffic lights, I like traffic lights, ... but only when they're green!
Ah, just a bit of Monty Python there!

But, seriously folks...coming to a corner near you soon are these new traffic lights

(NB Composite graphic - they don't all light up at the same time!)

You'll notice that they are made up of lots of little LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes).
We've seen them in Ipswich, West End and Brisbane City. Watch them for a while and you'll notice that they are very quick to turn on and off, well, in comparison to the usual incandescent ones.

Of course this will mean safety advantages for the road users. Being low voltage, something less than 240 volt power could be used. Not so much of a danger when involved in motor vehicle accidents. Maybe the poles could be lighter - not as much weight of power cables etc.

All LEDs are lit in these photos but I have seen ones with some LEDs not working. Obviously it would take a long time for the traffic light to become totally non-functioning. Each has a different pattern I hear you say? You're right! Each also has a different number of LEDs. See if you can guess how many there are in each colour. Answer coming soon! If you really care!
