The Passing of Ernie Percy

by Campbell Sharp

It was with deep regret that we noted the passing of Ernie Percy. As well as being the father of long time club member Leon, Ernie and his wife, Elaine, gave great support to our Association in many ways over many years. Ernie passed away after a long battle with a muscle wasting Motor Neuron Disease, after an active life this held him back over the last couple of years, a saddening and frustrating time for him.

Many times the Percy family played host to Association activities, ranging from welcoming us into their own home, onto more than one of their boats for days on the bay, early workshop days at the Yatala workshop and even into their camp for dawn on one particularly long midnight to dawn Observation/Navigation Run.

Ernie was always eager to help members with their mechanical problems, disappearing into the depths of the workshop, or under the house, to reappear shortly after with a bit to solve the problem, or the broken part fixed. He showed one of those Australian traits of never letting a problem beat him, the solution was at hand, if you looked and thought.

On behalf of all of our members, I extend deepest sympathies to Elaine, Lach and Leon on the loss of their husband and father and hope that they can gain cheer from the positive memories and influences that Ernie was to all of us.
