Mt. Tamborine Picnic

by Leon Percy

January 18th, 1998.

The picnic day as listed in the November calendar was very well attended and I'm sure everyone enjoyed themselves. The only problem from our point of view is that 13 of the 16 cars that attended were from the Nissan Special Vehicles Club which were informally invited in December, they are a very enthusiastic bunch with mostly imported and some quite exotic Nissans. Their club is fairly new with interests in "Show and Shine" events and nav runs, and support for performance enhancing bits and pieces. I'm sure we'll see more of them as the year progresses, we have swapped invitations for nav runs.

Campbell, Leon, Robert and Alita and John Que were our participants for the day which began at Daisy Hill with a leisurely drive up through the Luscombe Valley through Tamborine Village and then Wonglepong and Canungra. The climb up to Mt. Tamborine from Canungra is very steep and twisty, but quite good bitumen, it even has traffic lights. The mountain has become a tourist mecca and is almost as lively as Noosa. Spectacular views can be had from many lookouts facing in all directions, the view of the Gold Coast is magnificent, because it is not very far away, and the mountain is approaching 2,000ft in elevation (according to Campbell's altimeter).

The lunch at St. Bernards Hotel was good and filling, while we overlooked southern Moreton Bay, and observed the not-quite-native vegetation of the area. The day was cloudy enough so that we didn't have to find shelter from the sun, and the altitude kept it cool.

Tamborine has all the views of Mt. Glorious, and all the shops and galleries of Montville, but is much closer to Brisbane. Campbell and I even had time to zap down to Southport to do some scouting for sailing venues for our March sailing day.
